Snipers And Ferrets

There were a couple more games before the end of the day including sniper and ferrets which was another break from shooting. The aim of this game was for the snipers to hide within two minutes and sit back, waiting for the ferrets to come hunt them out. After two rounds, the team with the most amount of snipers left wins. Being the snipers first, Shawn and I headed down the dirt road, looking up one hill and then the other in hopes of finding a great hiding spot.

Seeing exactly that up to the right of the hill Shawn followed behind me to which we hid in a thick fern with two large trees on either side of us. There was enough space in there to fit two people and as I crawled in past the two large rocks in front of me, I felt little pricks in my back from a tree that with its twiggy appearance made me itch somewhat.

The great thing about our hiding spot was that it protected our back and most of our side to ferrets coming from the back area where the front area was fairly open. In strategic terms, ferrets would have to run right around to cap us as we were so burrowed into the bush and as there was one of us covering each side with the best of angles, we didn’t seem to be in any spot of trouble covering the front area, all we had to do was wait it out…

Sitting back and relaxing as the whistle sounded we kept as quiet as possible hearing footsteps get closer but hoping they would pass us without notice. An added bonus for us was one of our guys slightly up a tree which was half a meter off the ground, hidden behind the defense of the leaves covering the front of him. Being up the hill a touch, he was our front man of defense to which he stayed alive for the whole game.

Sniping From The Ferns

The trouble of my whereabouts began when seeing a guy run and duck behind a rock face down the hill some meters and in my view. Knowing that he was getting himself ready to scope out our area I decided to try and pick him off being the sniper I was. The first few bullets flew around him as he looked around urgently to see the culprit and upon his sighting me he started popping some caps my way.

Now it was a struggle to keep from being hit as luck finally came my way and I popped him in the goggles, the only thing apart from his gun that was revealed. Feeling a sense of achievement I sat tight for the rest of my stay, knowing that these shots would have been heard and sussed out.

Seeing Silas’s girlfriend walking down the path at the bottom of the hill looked almost too suspicious to me. Asking myself why she would leave herself out in the open so easily, I figured her to be active as she walked down slowly, looking up and around through the bushes. Her gun was down at the time so I figured she was still in play and as I started capping off long range shots towards her they flew around her just missing her by fractions.

The funny thing about this is that she didn’t show no urgency to run into the bushes or hide from the fire and looked disregardful to my stray bullets. Capping off some more bullets in her direction, even when she got hit in the ass by one of my bullets she didn’t do much but turn around lightly towards my direction hoping she could spot the sniper. However, it wasn’t until she kept slowly walking down the path that I realized she could have been shot previously trying to get to the barrier.

Caught From Behind

This being my best mistake, I heard a rumbling on the outside of my bushes to the left as some guy done a big runner and landed on the outside of where I sat. Figuring that he knew of my whereabouts I heard him shout out to others that I was in the bushes and knew I could only sit it out in anticipation. Hoping that he would run in front of me and expose himself to three sets of guns he done the smart thing and crawled back behind the thicket of bushes.

With my back turned to him I trusted upon Shawn’s hand signals and gun to keep me posted. Hearing a slight rustling behind me, I knew something was up and seconds later when I got capped in the back two or three times from close range, I knew that I was in trouble. Staying silent and not saying a word the guy yelled out to me “Are you hit” to which I looked myself over trying to cheat him out of a kill, seeing if there were any marks on my body.

Succumbing to Shawn who was persistently waving around not wanting to be spotted, I yelled out hit after copping a couple more shots to the back for my uncertainty. “Are you hit now” he said in a sadistic voice as I yelled out a couple of times and then began my march to the boundary with my gun raised in the air. Sitting it out for a couple of minutes with Jett I watched our little group of snipers head out of their little burrows to which Shawn was one of the seven left alive.

Scaring The Timid Guy

Swapping roles and becoming the ferret, Jett Shawn and I stayed together, wanting to keep the role of playmakers going. With the whistle sounding after two minutes for the snipers to hide we began on our little walk immediately up to our right and as we jumped over small logs and hid, Shawn signaled that there was a guy hidden in the bushes just in front of us.

Caught in my own little world as I pushed forward into the open whilst crawling, I got capped once or twice and found myself to be out in the quickest time yet. Heading back to the fence to where three or four guys had already been shot I stood there listening to the ref chat with the Arabic guy who was the intimidated terminator. You could tell when he spoke that the ref was just listening along with eagerness when he was really thinking “Yeah, whatever”.

This big guy was really a girl at heart to which he started talking about stupid things. “Yeah, my friends and I were going to go to some other skirmish places but we heard about this one and thought we would come here” he noted. The ref replied with his short explanation of how skirmish was a good sport but really, he replied because he wanted to make the girly boy feel favored.

“Me and my friends are going to come back here again” he uttered, how lame. Sitting my gun on a fence and aiming it at a tree, I scared the Arabic guy as I let off a cap and the gas cylinder exploded with force. Sounding like I was letting the air out of a monster truck’s tire all at once, the Arabic guy jumped in the air startled. Lame boy was the only one scared and as the ref almost cracked a smirk I knew that this boy needed some attention.

Charging The Flag

The second game of snipers and ferrets was over and with a head count, we knew instantly that they had won with nine people left. Not too phased, we headed out to our next battle ground which was to be our final real encounter before overtime ensued. Sharing some bullets around with everyone for this last game, we took a goggle break and being in the thick of the bush again, we lined up in our areas and then charged with the resounding whistle.

Mostly everyone was being a Rambo about this stage as I chucked myself behind a barricade. With small cracks in the wooden logged barricade I heard shots whistling from everywhere to which I had to lie flat as a board to have them creep through the cracks once or twice. Being splattered with the shrapnel of the pellet’s paint I wiped what little residue was left and in a bold move crept to the side of the barricade and done a roll on my back to expose myself to the sides.

Seeing some guys in the far edge of the bush on the other side of the bath I tried capping someone off who was advancing forward but had no luck. Seeing another enemy, I started capping at him as he’d done the same and as the bullets were coming too close for comfort I ducked back behind the barricade. “Stay behind the barricade” Killian yelled out to which he was behind another post meters behind me.

Doing just that for around four minutes, time started to waste and my passion for some action was growing. When the gun shots had started to cease in our direction I picked myself up and started to run headlong into the flag which was fifteen meters out of our reach and firmly in the open. Hearing four or five sets of feet behind me, I was surprised that a small portion of our group had followed me to charge at the flag with numbers.

However, we soon found with a couple of steps that we were laden with bullets to which we all committed ourselves to mass murder. With a sense of relief and triumph, the five of us held our guns up high and walked off the field with our heads just as high.

The Last Village Game

The last game was played in the Vietnam village which had the rules changed favorably. With the flag being wrapped around the middle village’s roof tight, the aim of the game of course was to grab the flag. However, if you got shot, you could come back into the game but you had to at least make an attempt to head back to the dead man’s territory before forwarding off again.

With the flag being a touch closer to our side, Jett and I made the daring choice to run headlong into the thick of the battle and straight for the flag. Sounding eager, as the whistle sounded the both of us ran our little hearts out caring not to fire and hearing bullets breaking open all around us I jumped straight into the little hut which was trenched into the ground some one or two meters.

Bullets were absolutely soaring around us and as I jumped up to grab the flag, I knew its being firmly stuck would be a problem. Continuously I would jump up heedless of oncoming bullets, pushing the straw roof as hard as I could upwards in an attempt to loosen to flag wrapped around once. Finally, some guy came and loosened it for us and as he done so I ran with it and Jett back to our side of the battlefield.

Hearing some cheers engulf our area and with half a sense of completion, the same guy who helped us make the last stand in this same village scenario walked up to me and asked what the game plan was. Running the back ways through the huts and onto a little trail leading all the way around to their side we came to the back of a hut and noticed a guy inside shooting at our men.

“What are we going to do” he asked as I thought about it slightly and figured we would have to try and sneak me around. “You run towards the hut over there and try to draw fire while I sneak around the back and plant the flag down”. Making our double dash, I found him to get shot almost as soon as we stepped out of the bushes but I ran for a couple of steps before being pelted with shots. However, placing the flag down on the ground to where I had been shot, I was at the back of their area and thus, had completed the game.

Every Man For Himself

The final episode of our extended day of our war came with an all in and every man for themselves game. Jett and Shawn had cowered out of this one by spending up all their bullets on the previous game, feeling they didn’t need any further unsolicited bruises. Rounding myself up in a circle around the ref, he cockily explained how it was every man for themselves as soon as his blowing the whistle and with that everyone started taking a couple of steps back.

Glancing at Tyler I walked right up next to him and whispered “Your mine” to which he started making some more backward steps towards the cover of a hut. When the whistle was sounded bullets started flying and as none hit me directly, I myself hid inside a hut. With a fury of bullets engulfing me I noticed who I thought to be Tyler taking pot shots at me from another hut so when he ducked down I made a strong run over towards him and then creeping around the hut’s back I pointed my gun directly at him.

Being someone else apart from Tyler I heard him plead in fear “Don’t shoot man, I’m out of bullets” carting his gun away high up in the air. Such a soft victory had to be exceeded as I ran out into the open of the field and seeing Killian standing right in the middle, started to shoot shots at him. Seeing Tyler also running away in one direction I kept popping caps in his direction until I hit him on the ass a couple of times.

Jumping into another hut I continued to keep shooting until I was almost out of bullets and with a couple left I headed back to the dead man’s boundary. However, as the ref had seen I still had a couple of bullets left he urged me to step back out there to which I pounded out some medium range shots at someone and then stepped back off.

The Muddy Drive Home

Being the last game of the day, we headed back up to the camp, all of us being tired as a mother fucker. Changing our clothes and washing my hands we all talked of the photos that the whole group involved themselves in at lunch. One of the refs got out a camera and took a picture of the whole group together a couple of times, something they probably do all the time. Anyway, once we were changed we headed back to the cars to which Jett and Shawn had yellow stains on their shoulder and I, unscathed.

For the rest of the trip home we talked of skirmish and some time later I was back at home to dwell in front of this computer for some hours. Now, to what I thought wouldn’t be a long entry, I have certainly contradicted myself with these twenty pages of chronology for Sunday’s events. As I jump off tonight I know that I can never escape the trench of depiction I’ve dug for myself. I can never sell my days short and I can never get myself out of the red. Therefore, how long will I be doomed with vigilant memories, backlogged to the beginning of my immediate memory.
