Knocking On A Door Too Late (Part 4) – Mad Chaos: November 17, 1998

Legs Like Jelly

The night progressed and I bought myself three more drinks surprised that the price just kept escalating through the night. By the end of the night I had bought $5 worth of drinks and upon sharing my water with the rest of them they had done the same when they bought a drink. For most of the night we were up on the stage but there was some time when we left the dance area completely to rest our legs. Vedat and Karl were playing snooker for some time around 1:00 p.m. and around that time while I was heading back to the dance floor Keith and Binh were leaving.

Shawn and Tatton had gone off to the pub just next door and Vedat, Karl, Tyler and I jumped back onto the dance floor. My legs felt like jelly most of the time I was back on stage and I had noticed Azalea while I was up on the stage at one point. Jumping down while she was lounging I asked if she would like to come up and enjoy some dancing on stage but I think she was nervous or didn’t want to dance. Jumping back on stage I tried to keep at it but as I didn’t move around much all I seemed to do was dehydrate more.

Playing Matchmaker For A Stranger

There was this Hindu guy that looked more black or Lebanese than what he was. He was fairly tall with a cap on and as we made friends on the dance floor he asked me if I would tap a girl on the shoulder and tell her that he liked her. Asking myself “Is this guy serious” I done what he had asked of me hoping that I didn’t hear him wrong over the loud music.

The girl that I approached seemed content in keeping to herself probably thinking that I was cracking onto her but as I pointing out who liked her she just kept on dancing with her smile. She wasn’t all that good looking but as I stepped back to the guy with a childish grin on his face I told him it was all cool and to walk over to her. Shaking my hand with pride he walked over to her, what happened next I don’t really know. What I do know is that later in the night he told me that she had a boyfriend or something, not my problem.

Karl Tries His Luck

Around 2:00 a.m. we jumped off the dance floor and as we did Ralf told me that he was heading home and asked if I was joining him. Knowing that I didn’t want to be in his car to hear his shit all the way home or in the case that he went to sleep behind the wheel I kept myself behind. Walking back to the tables we found no one we originally talked to for the night. Tyler was pissed off his head and as the four of us (Karl and Vedat also) sat down near the stairs we urged each other to crack onto some girls.

Karl was the first considerably drunk but spying two fairly attractive fake blondes he walked his way gracefully over. Tyler, Vedat and I cheered him on as we looked over his progress. For more than a minute he was over there talking to the girls but in the end he came back over without as much as a peep to success. The girls must have been taken or didn’t want to get taken for the night but overall, Karl done a good job.

Here and there Tyler tried his hand to the girls walking up and down the stairs and we got talking to one or two of them but nothing serious. Tyler started drumming on the table to the noise of the bass from the music. Karl followed soon after and as I also allowed my hands freedom to drum a beat we were overlooked by most surrounding us.

A Field Guide To Clubbers

That was the nearing of our night, unsuccessful to court. That’s when I realized what I had read in FHM. There are three types of people at nightclubs. The sensible type that leave way too early, those like Keith and Binh who have had too much to drink. Then there is the type of person that leaves around 1:00 a.m. or the middle of the clubbing night, always with the intention of having a girl under their arms.

Then there is the type that leaves at the end of the night who are usually just there for the dancing. If you get these times wrong you usually abuse the stereo type you invade for the night and muck it up for everyone else. Myself, I wanted to leave at 1:00 a.m. to unleash myself for the first real time after Lyssa but I didn’t. Instead I left with a heap of hormones at 2:30 a.m. and as I looked through the thickening crowd outside I knew there was now no chance of becoming that person at 1:00 a.m. no hope…

Stunts On The Main Street

On our way back to the Cabin we came across a girl and a guy around 19 years of age sitting on the opposite side of the road. As we approached them Vedat started chatting to the chick in a skirt sitting with her guy friend on a mounded hill. The drunkards began singing to them and high on my Nocturnal nature I joined them doing handstands on the main street as Taxi’s passed me.

Asking Karl to lay on the floor as a car came he lay down and as he got up Vedat lay on the floor. The Taxi had swerved way before and as they had lay down I also done my deal faking to be drunk as the Taxi passed and almost falling near it. When this was done we started singing songs in our drunken tone to the girl for twenty minutes and after we found out they were waiting for a train that only came at 6:00 a.m. we wished them good luck and made our way back to the rooms.

A Knock Too Late

Walking past Azalea’s room at 3:15 a.m. I noticed the television light on and as I was by myself with everyone already in the room I made my way to her door. Tatton noticed me and also joined me as I knocked on her door. The first two times they didn’t hear me and the third time I heard someone get up. The other girl that was also pretty came to the door and I knew it would be a hard ask with her there.

Telling me that they had been sleeping for the past two hours I asked if I could only come in for a couple of minutes but she knew those couple of minutes that I woke up Azalea for would turn into much more. My night was over and if I had arrived an hour or two earlier I might have been the one Azalea was calling to instead of Keith as he walked past. Azalea wanted to speak with someone from our room but because she was shy she didn’t walk past it. So, if I was earlier probably something could have happened but as you can see I left empty handed at 3:15 a.m.

Hunting For Food At Dawn

Back inside the Cabin Binh and Keith were already asleep. Shawn and Tatton had just come back from somewhere and thinking it would be more fun, Karl, Vedat and Tyler made their way to the beach to sleep. As they left Tatton and Shawn jumped into the bunks as I was given a pillow and a blanket to lay on the floor. My heart was still pumping and Shawn along with Tatton were just as hungry as me.

Pillaging through the scraps and trying to find matches to light up a piece of bread and eat it as it was frozen the both of them jumped up. Walking back down to ‘Waves’ around 3:30 a.m. we got to see the aftermath of a fight that had broken out between two big guys. Walking to the Kebab shop Tatton or Shawn didn’t find anything interesting there. Finding the Hindu guy with the hat I asked if he knew of a service station nearby where we could get some food.

He had no idea but a girl that his friend was with started telling me that the nearest place was 20 minutes away. Saying goodbye to them I came across Shawn and Tatton asking the same thing of another guy and as he kept blabbering on about directions towards Wollongong I said “So basically, it’s a long way away”. Stopping his conversation in a comedic manner he replied “Yes” and standing as if dazed we thanked him for his time and walked away.

Hunting For Food On Foot

Deciding to trek away from Wollongong in the opposing direction we came across the same guy and girl that were sitting on the grass and we were singing to upon leaving ‘Waves’. This time I just asked them for directions as I talked nicely to the girl. Knowing they would be stranded until 6:00 a.m. at the least I invited them to the Cabin but they were content but happy we asked, at least the girl was. No good advice was handed down from them apart from the fact it would take a while to get some food if we walked.

Heading back to the Cabin Tatton decided that we should take the car and drive. The both of them were drunk and Shawn had more than ten cups of alcohol yet Tatton wanted him to drive. Shawn was asking me if I would like to drive and he was eager to let me drive but Tatton wasn’t as confident. As we walked to the car and I jumped in the back seat I told them I would be capable to drive the car and as Shawn backed down more and more from driving not very confident if he received a fine we talked Tatton into letting me drive.
