Sick Day at Cronulla Beach (Part 1) – Mad Chaos: September 27, 1998

Where can I start to explain Saturday. Well, apart from the fact that I was sick as a dog and tired as a mother fucker, the day was pretty good. After my last entry on Friday night I was getting myself to sleep and noticed that my nose was partially blocked. Nearing 12:30 a.m. as I was just about to fall to sleep Lyssa gave me a call. Lyssa had come home early from the Catholic Club or wherever she went to. Lyssa told me that she had seen Keith, Ralf, Shawn and Tatton there but they either didn’t notice her or ignored her.

Lyssa was very quiet as soon as we started talking and through the conversation I found out that Lyssa was depressed. Lyssa was depressed for the fact that I had cheated on her and it was playing on her mind as she called me Friday night or early Saturday morning. Lyssa was teary eyed and I tried to make her feel better. Because Lyssa started to get upset she wanted to go but I kept her on the phone for another ten minutes to try and make her a bit happier. That’s when I decided to tell her how unique thoughts have been in my mind of her bearing my children and being my wife. For no one else have I written these feelings but that didn’t really make Lyssa happy because she gave me a reality check “We won’t get married and if get pregnant, straight to get a referral from the doctor”.

The conversation ended around 1:15 a.m. and then I tried to get myself to sleep. It’s fucked when you try to sleep but have to have a mental picture in your mind of breathing. With one nostril blocked I had to be half awake so that I wouldn’t find it hard to breath. That’s pretty fucked when you’re really tired. For the whole night I only got myself three hours of sleep as I had to wake up at 8:30 a.m. for the beach. My up and coming flu was fucking me up and all night because I was scared both my nostrils would block I had dreams about breathing. My dreams were somewhat boring and they pissed me off but that’s all I could dream of.

Waking up at 8:00 a.m. I had myself some tea and that fixed me up a bit. This is the first flu I’ve had in a while and if you read through these Diary’s you will notice that I rarely get sick. This year I’ve probably only been sick twice before this flu came along. Jumping into the shower to try and soothe and relax myself I washed my body, brushed my teeth and then refreshed myself upon walking into my room. The time was nearing 9:00 a.m. so I gave Jett a call on his mobile phone. This time Jett’s mobile phone was turned on and greeting him we made plans for the day. Looking outside at the sky I noticed that there were thin clouds covering the sky but the day had potential for being hot and clear. Our plans for the beach weren’t hampered and putting on a hat I made my way to Campbelltown.

The walk to Campbelltown was serene and relaxing and encountering Queen Street I noticed that the Festival on the street was either getting ready or packing up. Every year the Fisher’s Ghost Festival has a street parade where heaps of stalls are set up and the main street is blocked off to traffic. Later on in Saturday I found out that they were packing up so I gather Friday was the day of the big stall. Huge speakers were pumping the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ song. Making my way to the Station I noticed Jett waiting for me with his boogie-board in hand. Jett didn’t get the chance to speak with Anders on Friday night so we only had one boogie-board.

Greeting Jett we made our way up the stairs and to the ticket machine. Campbelltown’s ticket machines would only let you take out full fare and even though I stopped off at Bradbury shops to take out $5 from my Savings Account I wasn’t prepared to pay the full amount, what would I eat. Jett didn’t buy his ticket either because I told him that he would have a better chance at the Leumeah Station ticket machines because they are always OPEN. Catching the next train we jumped off but I was shocked to find that you also had to pay full fare here. That upset me somewhat but I had a plan as Jett bought his full fare ticket. My plans were to travel to Sydenham without a ticket and then gather one there by using Jett’s ticket to get out.

Leaving Leumeah we jumped onto our Sydenham train via East Hills. The train trip to Sydenham was unhampered but Jett was being a bit loud and funny. Jett was being weird Saturday with his seating arrangements and instead of sitting in an area where we could view girls (Because that was one of our primary objectives) we sat in obsolete seats facing no one. That was substituted by Jett being funny and all the way to Sydenham I would be funny and Jett would utter “You need to see a psychiatrist” and I would reply “But I am a psychologist and I have good analogy’s”. Jett also noticed the two hickeys on my neck from the start of our journey. Asking me where they came from I told him sarcastically that I got hit by a squash ball and the other was from a mosquito. Of course, Jett didn’t believe me and for the rest of the day those two hickeys and the person who gave them to me plagued his mind. Under pressure I didn’t buckle and I didn’t think Jett should know that they came from Lyssa. So, I left Jett guessing and made him believe that I met a new girl as he sat there trying to guess names.

Reaching Sydenham Jett visited the toilets and taking his ticket I walked through the gates. Jett’s ticket wasn’t really needed as an old Italian guy was on the door and he was blind enough for me to get through twice without him noticing. Buying a concession ticket from Sydenham I walked back downstairs with Jett and we waited for our Cronulla train. The sun wasn’t out that much but Jett and I hoped that the day would get better. Sitting in the sun it wasn’t that gratifying or warm. On the train to Cronulla there was no real difference in the foolish way we were acting or where we were sitting. Compared to last weekend when we visited Cronulla there weren’t much honey’s on the train. The surplus was in security for the train and as Jett told me they were trying to crack down this weekend on people who didn’t have tickets police officers came down the aisle asking for tickets. Luckily the cops only looked at the tickets and didn’t check them otherwise I would be fucked up and have a large fine.

Reaching Cronulla and walking to the main street my hunch was correct, pussy wasn’t out in power. In fact walking up the main street I was disappointed to what I was seeing, not much girl meat or not enough hot girl meat to my liking. Walking into the Fish and Chip take away shop that we will come to know as our continual hangout for Cronulla we ordered our breakfast. At my house I only had some tea and that was it so you can imagine I was hungry. Having only $5 to spend since Optus took more money out of my Credit Card (If it was actually them) I bought a hot chips with two scallops and three crab fillets. Sitting down at the seats outside, the sun was coming down on us but more unbearable was the light disturbing my vision. The sun wasn’t all that hot but it did get hot for a couple of minutes. That heat along with the heat of my food inside my mouth made me wait for a while before I started eating. As tears came to my eyes from the discomfort my eyes were almost ceaselessly squinted. The sun was pissing me off and I was also pissed off that our table didn’t have one of those umbrella’s. Coming to a conclusion that I needed to buy some glasses Jett and I headed into some shade where I could finish off my food. Jett was going crazy with food as he spent around $15 to feed himself and at the end of the day he spent around $25.

Hunger was somewhat satisfied even though Jett was digging into my food after eating his and we headed for the beach. Sitting behind the clouds was the sun and the same was Jett with his seating. The water was fierce and the beach had been swollen by waves and a higher tide than usual. Because of that there wasn’t much space on the beach to actually sit so Jett chose the downhill slope of sand just coming off the top road. Jett must have had Min-Su in his mind to be staying away from chicks the whole day but I found it weird when I suggested sitting on the beach and he thought it was best to sit up there. Looking down onto the beach’s sands I noticed two lots of groups that would become my eyes attraction for the rest of the day.

Having changed already my shirt was off and I had Jett’s board shorts on. Sitting upright on my towel I scoped out the area and started to get cold as the winds were picking. Looking out into the swells I noticed that there were literally no people swimming and everyone was on a boogie-board. That showed me that the rips would take you out to sea and there were signs around reading ‘Strong Rip’ so I kept out of the water. After half an hour of sitting on our towels up on that sand hill and throwing sand at kids who were boogie-boarding down the sand hill Jett went for his swim. Bringing along a wetsuit and flippers he made his way to the waters and I watched him jump his way in and paddle out to all the other surfers.
